One of the most persistent theories in the Star Wars universe may have some grounding in reality. We asked Astrophysicist Dave Minton about the 'Endor Holocaust', the fan theory that the exploding Death Star would have annihilated the moon forest of Endor at the end of 'Return of the Jedi'. It turns out to be far worse than anyone expected.

Scientists say blowing up the Death Star would have had a catastrophic result.
Instead of seeing ths [happiness of Ewoks] at the end of "Return of the Jedi", we should have seen ths [forest in fire].
People have theorized about an "Endor Holocaust" for years.
We now have proof.
In a new paper, astrophysicist Dave Minton analyzed the fallout from blowing up the Death Star.
Judging from the way the Death Star explodes, very little of the debris would vaporize or scatter and it wouldn't be moving fast enough to stay in orbit.
The falling ball of rubble would strike Endor.
At more than 6,000 mph.
This would create a 434-mile-wide crater.
4 times larger than the one left by the asteroid that helped wide out the dinosaurs.
And this on a moon only 15% the size of Earth.
Everything on the surface of Endor would be obliterated.
"The Ewoks are dead. All of them", concludes Minton.
The atmosphere would heat up so much that every body of water would flash into steam.
And every forest would ignite, creating a global firestorm.
It looks like the Dark Side wins again.
