The Pre-Republic Era (—25,053 BBY), also known as the Early Hyperspace Age, was the period before the formation of the Galactic Republic. It included the formation and evolution of all the species of the galaxy, the dawn of their civilizations and their first developments in space travel, and ended in approximately 25,053 BBY, when the Republic was founded.
Pre-Republic history was largely dominated by ancient and mysterious species who developed interstellar travel long before Humans and other, more well-known species. Such species included the Columi, Killiks, and Rakata. The names and histories of some of these species have been entirely lost to time, including the Celestials. In their travels about the galaxy, many of these civilizations affected the evolution and cultural development of the more primitive species that would later dominate galactic affairs. Some built massive, mysterious structures for these and other purposes, including Centerpoint Station, the Maw, the Foundry, and the Star Forge.
The Galactic Republic was the ruling government of the galaxy that existed for more than 25 thousand years, until its reformation into the first Galactic Empire in 19 BBY. Throughout its existence, the state was commonly known as the Republic. In the post-Republic era and beyond, it was remembered as the Old Republic; it was also rarely known as the Old Galactic Republic or the First Galactic Republic. At times, the term Old Order was used to describe the Republic but was not common.
The Galactic Republic was a representative democracy, composed of various star systems, sectors and member worlds throughout most of the known galaxy. Its central government consisted of three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The first was the Galactic Senate, a body of elected or appointed representatives. Its main duties included mediating disputes over issues ranging from planetary to galactic-scale, regulating trade routes between star systems, and in theory, represented the interests of Republic citizens. The Office of the Supreme Chancellor was the Senate's executive counterpart. The Supreme Chancellor was elected from the ranks of the Senate by its members. As the leader of the Senate and the overall representative of the Republic, the Chancellor also held the titles Head of State and President. The judicial branch consisted of the Supreme Court and the lower Regional Courts. The Supreme Court was composed of twelve justices, one of whom held the leadership position of Chief Justice.
Throughout most of its history as the dominant galactic power, the Republic did not style itself as a strong centralized government, but rather as a union of sovereign planets for the purposes of collective security and economic prosperity. It was said that its complete history could "fill a thousand libraries." In the last decades that preceded the rise of Emperor Palpatine's New Order, the Republic was a benevolent—though ineffectual—government tied up in layers of bureaucracy, hampered by political and corporate corruption. The Galactic Republic, which had existed for at least 25,034 years, was brought down by the Sith when they transformed it into the Galactic Empire. This, however, was just the first of seven regime changes, that replaced the Republic, over the next 157 years.
The Tionese War was a war fought between the young Galactic Republic and the Honorable Union of Desevro & Tion from 24,000-23,900 BBY. The Tion Cluster had become a largely-disunited backwater in the thousand years that had followed the defeat of Xim's empire, and the Cluster's leaders saw a rapid conquest of the Republic and the acquisition of its technology as their salvation. The Union attacked the Republic without warning, and the Republic was initially unprepared for the Tionese invasion and suffered multiple defeats. However, its superior industrial might and the aid of the Jedi Order allowed it to eventually subjugate Tionese space after a century-long conflict.
The Slice was a wedge-shaped section of the galaxy which began at the edge of the Core Worlds and extended through the Colonies, the Inner Rim, the Expansion Region, the Mid Rim, and even the Outer Rim Territories. The tip of the Slice was known as the Arrowhead, where modern civilization had been founded. It was roughly bounded on either side by the Perlemian Trade Route and the Corellian Run. After these two major trade routes were established, the systems of the Slice were rapidly developed as colonists followed the two routes and migrated into the Slice in search of habitable worlds.
The Great Manifest Period of the Galactic Republic was a span of time that lasted from 20,000 BBY to 17,018 BBY. It was characterized by increased movement into the Slice and the establishment of the Expansion Region in its Rimward territories. Even as the Republic expanded astrographically, the government expanded its bureaucracy. The limit of fifty systems per sector that had been set by the early Republic continued to be ignored, causing already burgeoning sectors in the newly colonized areas of galactic space to be virtually ungovernable. Additionally, the era featured the creation of the Metellos Trade Route, which connected Coruscant to Metellos and other points west of the galactic center. The new hyperspace route increased trade among the newly connected systems. Around 2,000 years thereafter, the bureaucracy expanded with the establishment of the Bureau of Ships and Services to regulate and manage transportation across the galactic community.
Culturally, the Republic was undergoing change, as well. Vianism, a religion that had developed among the Core Worlds, became non-extant on its generative planets; however, it spread into the expanding regions of the galaxy and took hold within the Kanz sector. Additionally, the famed Shawken Spire saw its destruction during the Great Manifest Period, an event that was remembered over 8,000 years later. All the while, outside of Republic space, the two planets Neona and Kamino underwent dramatic climate changes. These events, which began during the Great Manifest Period, caused extinction for the native species of Neona and forced adaption of the Kaminoan species. Nevertheless, the era and its corresponding boom were brought to an abrupt end by internal strife in the form of the First Alsakan Conflict.
Westward of the Corellian Run, Republic traders had business with Herglics, Grans, and Tynnans.
The Alsakan Conflicts and depredations by slavers and pirates who came outside of the Galactic Republic, caused devastation in the Expansion Region areas of The Slice and forced settlers in those expansion areas west of the Corellian Run. Prosperity pushed colonization into and beyond the Mid Rim.
It was further opened to settlement by the expansion of the Corellian Trade Spine and the discovery of the Rimma Trade Route followed by the Hydian Way.
The Kymoodon Era was an era of time in the galaxy that started circa 15,000 BBY that marked a second boom in expansion similar to the Great Manifest Period. Hyperspace travel became more commonplace during this time and some of the most noted starship manufacturers noted this era as the time of their founding.
In the last centuries of the era, Republic colonists spread beyond the frontier into what was then the Wild Space between the Republic and Hutt Space. The Hutts sponsored numerous raids against these planets with the aim of enslaving the colonists. Lexrul, Drogheda, Hathrox, Imram and Parcovey Minor were among those colonies targeted. The successful defense of Parcovey Minor was one of the few bright spots for the colonists amid the raids. From Farm-Wife to Warrior was a contemporary account of slavery in the era.
The Kymoodon Era stretched from the end of the Indecta Era in 15,000 BBY to the Pius Dea Era, which began with the election of Contispex I as Supreme Chancellor in 11,987 BBY.
The Rianitus Period of history lasted from 9000 BBY to 8000 BBY. It was remembered for the 275-year reign of Blotus the Hutt. Around the end of this period (c. 8000 BBY), the Republic established an outpost on Malastare's eastern continent.
The Subterra Period was a period of time in the galaxy that lasted from 8000 BBY to 7000 BBY. During this time, there was new mapping of the galactic southern quadrant. The planet of Malastare acted as an anchor for short hyperlane snippets, also known as praediums. The supply lines that linked the galaxy with the Rishi Maze were also constructed.
The rapid expansion however led to lawlessness in the Rim and Coruscant lost its control on its new territories. This was thought to have contributed to the Second Great Schism in 7003 BBY, which led to the start of the Hundred-Year Darkness.
The Corellian Trade Spine was a major trade route. It began at Corellia and headed towards the edge of the galaxy, in the direction of Duro. It passed Devaron and Bestine IV before intersecting the Rimma Trade Route at Yag'Dhul. As it continued it passed through the Greater Javin region of space (which contains the Ison Corridor) before intersecting the Hydian Way and exiting into open inter-galactic space.
The Great Hyperspace War was a war fought between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire in 5000 BBY.
The conflict encompassed the entire Galactic Republic, though the main forces focused their attention on three Republic worlds, and later took the war to the remote star system Primus Goluud, and the Sith mausoleum world of Korriban.
After it overcame the initial shock of the Sith invasion, the Republic's armadas regrouped and annihilated the Sith Empire, forcing the Sith Lord Naga Sadow to exile himself to Yavin 4.
The Kanz Disorders (3970–3670 BBY) was a three hundred year-long conflict that took place in the Kanz sector in the Outer Rim Territories during the Old Republic era.
The Hydian Way was a major hyperlane that traveled from the Outer Rim to the Core Worlds and back. It was the only hyperlane to travel the entire length of the galaxy, in any orientation. Therefore, it was the longest known hyperlane in the galaxy and one of the five major routes. It began in the northeastern quadrant of the Outer Rim and traveled southwest to the Core before wrapping around the Deep Core and terminating at the southern portion of the Outer Rim. The route was blazed by Freia Kallea of Brentaal and was named in honor of Banu Hydia, a Duros co-blazer that died saving Kallea. An opera about the blazing of the Hydian Way, named The Kallea Cycle, debuted 3,000 years later.
The Ruusan Reformation was an event that restructured the entire Galactic Republic following the New Sith Wars, taking power away from the Supreme Chancellor and reinvesting it in the Galactic Senate.
600 before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) was a year in the Great Peace of the Republic. The era, having begun four hundred years earlier, featured widespread settlement into the unexplored regions of the Outer Rim Territories and the opening of the Deep Core. Around this year, Jedi Master Bodo Baas inherited the Tedryn Holocron, a Jedi teaching device.
The Declaration of a New Order was a proclamation made by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in 19 BBY, first as an address to an Extraordinary Session of the Galactic Senate and then to the general populace. In it, he proclaimed himself Emperor of the galaxy, legalized the extermination of the Jedi Order, and outlined his vision of transforming the thenceforth-abolished Galactic Republic into his new Galactic Empire.
The anniversary of the Declaration of a New Order was celebrated as Empire Day.
