Powers are superhuman abilities that some people are born with in the world of Code 8 (2019). Those with powers are referred to as powered, power enabled or PWP (people with power), and are registered and identified via a class system required and upheld by the LCPD. They are categorised by class, the higher the class, the more powerful and experienced the powered individuals.
Code 8 is the eponymous police radio code used regularly by the LCPD, meaning “response to unauthorized use of power”.
Description
Approximately 4% of the population is born with abnormal abilities. How powered people came to be is not yet known, or at least not common knowledge. Although powerful and potentially dangerous, powered people suffer in society as a marginalized group, with most living below the poverty line and under severe restrictions.
Powered individuals must be trained on how to utilize their individual powers effectively since those that failed to control their power will invertedly wreck havoc on their surroundings or simply wasting their powers or worse getting themselves into deadly situations, which required skillful usage of their power. It is still unknown how powered individuals learn how to utilize their powers but most of the time, it is seemed to be through self-teaching or trial-and-error experiences. However, in rare cases, it is possible to gain mentorship from more experienced powered individuals.
A class system is used to determined the level of power and experience of the powered individuals. It is known that class 5 powers are the strongest and most experienced ones. The best example is Connor Reed who is a Class 5 Electric that can knock out the power of an entire city block.
Powered people's power will become weakened or unstable if powered individuals age or suffer terminal illness like in the case of Reed's mother, Mary who cannot control her cryokinesis due to her cancer, causing her to involuntarily freeze objects.
History & Society
In the early 1900s, Lincoln City (then America’s fastest growing economy) opened its doors to hundreds of powered individuals to help build the “City of the Future”. Power-enabled people were invited to help with manufacturing and construction since, at the time, the usefulness of those skills outweighed the potential dangers. The origin of their powers was not known, but as long as they were effective workers, it didn't matter. They were fire fighters, police officers, doctors, and more, using their powers to help people. But due to the rise of automation, over time those with power were no longer economically in demand since machines could now do what they could do. Hundreds began to lose work and were laid off, and employers could seemingly refuse to hire powered people once registration was established. The power enabled had difficulty finding even the most humble jobs. In the present day, most powered people are living under the poverty line. Some people have even been known to go as far as giving their children up if they’re born with powers and cannot control them.
Sometime in the 1980s, a comprehensive power registration policy was imposed on Lincoln City by the municipal government, and new technology - Guardians and Drones - were brought in for the LCPD to handle power-enabled threats. Even so, pressure continued to mount for an outright power ban, with protests arising in the city demanding that powered people need to be regulated. Following the deaths of four police officers during Sutcliffe’s attack on the LCPD’s monthly psyke run, proponents push the outright power ban bill through to City Hall to be voted on.
The presence of powered people is suggested to be worldwide - one news banner states that the Pope officially declared powers as deviations from God’s plan. Though it’s not stated when they began appearing, they were part of American society as early as at least the 1920s.
Types
Camouflage
Camouflagers have the ability to visually blend into their environment with a chameleon effect. They were introduced in Code 8: Part II, though they weren’t given an official name.
- Notable Camos: Tarak
Cryo (Cryokinetic)
Cryos possess cryokinesis - they can generate and manipulate cold and ice.
They can freeze objects solid, doing so most easily with liquids. They can lower the temperature of the air around them, causing surfaces to frost over and freeze. Presumably, they can also generate and release ice, using their powers similarly to how Pyros control fire, though this hasn’t been seen yet on screen.
- Notable Cryos: Mary Reed
Brawn
Brawns possess superior strength, able to carry several times their own body weight.
They can lift and carry hundreds or thousands of pounds, crush solid objects in their hands, and bend metal. Brawns at Big Joe’s construction site are seen casually tossing hollow cinder blocks. The Class 4 Brawn drug dealer at the Riverton Towers psyke raid was able to throw a large barbell weight like a discus, crushing the head of a Guardian.
- Notable Brawns: Freddie
Electric (Electrokinetic)
Electrics possess electrokinesis - they can generate and manipulate electricity.
They can use this electric energy in a variety of ways, and when using their power, their eyes tend to spark a light blue. When powering up for a high level ability like a remote surge, the lightning blue energy can also be seen running through their veins.
- Notable Electrics: Connor Reed (Class 5)
Exoderma
Exodermas have enhanced durability and extremely tough skin that can withstand considerable physical damage.
Exoderma have hardened skin that acts as a natural armour, granting them unusual resilience. Unlike most other powers, this one appears involuntary - it is not something they can turn on or off, but an intrinsic ability.
Healer
Healers have the ability to heal other living humans of bodily damage and diseases - including broken bones, open wounds, and even cancer - through physical contact.
The process involves the Healer taking a portion of the injury or illness onto or inside their own body. It’s not an exact 1 to 1 transfer, and Healers themselves have a natural regenerative healing factor, healing much more quickly than the average person. For example, when Nia treats Connor, the cut on his arm is completely healed, leaving no trace of injury. When she later reveals the same cut on her own body, hers has healed significantly. But it’s still a painful experience, one that could kill a Healer if they take on something too deadly or severe.
- Notable Healers: Nia
Memory Wiper
Memory Wipers have the psychic power to interact with and erase memories with a person through touch.
Wipers can view and experience or erase memories alongside a person, from single events to entire people. However, memories have roots, and if any linger, others can grow back in time. So when trying to erase a specific person or place from someone’s memory, the Wiper must erase all associated memories as well.
- Notable Users: Tamera
Pyro (Pyrokinetic)
Pyros possess pyrokinesis - they have the ability to generate and manipulate heat and fire.
They can create flames from their hands and fingertips, and can heat their skin to burning temperatures, which makes it glow red hot like molten lava. They appear to be mostly fire-resistant, as melting things with a touch doesn't harm them.
- Notable Pyros: Maddy
Reader
Readers possess a type of telepathy, specifically mind reading. As their name suggests, Readers can only read minds, not control them or communicate between them.
They need to make eye contact to read their targets. When done to Connor this appears to make him uncomfortable, though it’s unclear whether that’s due to the intense eye contact or if the person being read can feel the Reader in their mind. When using their abilities, a Reader’s pupil’s dilate and their eyes light up with a sort of opalescent glow, which is reflected in the eyes of their target.
- Notable Readers: Marcus Sutcliffe
Shifter
Shifters can alter their physical form and appearance at will.
They can change the entire structure of their face, skin, hair, eyes and entire body. Shapeshifting allows them to alter specific parts of their appearance at a time or mimic the likeness of a particular person. As such, Shifters like Copperhead make excellent spies and assassins, able to infiltrate locations, gain intel, impersonate enemies or innocents, assume new identities and disappear without a trace.
- Notable Shifters: Copperhead
TK (Telekinetic)
TKs, or telekinetics, have the ability to move and apply physical force to objects with only their mind.
They can levitate and manipulate nearby objects, including a human body, as seen when Garrett Kelton uses his power to pull Freddie out of harm’s way. They can exert enough force to hold a person to the ground even as they struggle to resist the invisible pressure. TKs can control several items at once with enough control - Garrett is able to keep several lightbulbs carefully afloat with no real effort.
- Notable TKs: Garrett Kelton
Transducer
Transducers possess technokinesis and technopathy - they have the ability to manipulate and communicate with technology. It is a rare “one in a million” power.
Transducers can exert control over technology like computers, robots, digital hardware, and other devices. They appear to manifest as a rare offshoot of Electrics, as they’re easily mistaken as such. When using their powers, their eyes flicker and glow like a television screen.
- Notable Transducers: Pav
Trivia
- Powers are classified as weapons, and so people with powers are almost always considered to be “armed and dangerous”
- A powered person’s emotional state can greatly effect control of their powers
